About This Spot

Walking into the Department Of Public Safety Cafeteria feels like stepping into a quiet, unpretentious corner of Baton Rouge where time slows down just enough to appreciate the simple, steady rhythm of a classic Southern eatery. It’s not flashy, and it won’t overwhelm you with gimmicks—here, the atmosphere carries the weight of everyday life, the kind that comforts and grounds you amid a busy day.

The pace is unhurried, with the gentle hum of familiar routines unfolding alongside the comforting aroma of home-cooked staples. This isn’t a place for rushing meals or extravagant menus, but for settling into honest flavors that speak to tradition and care. Patrons move through daily specials with the ease of those who know what to expect but still find something quietly satisfying in each plate.

What stands out most is the feeling of straightforward warmth threaded through the dining room. It’s a space where the staff greets you with genuine attentiveness, balancing efficiency with a human touch. With a no-fuss approach, the cafeteria becomes a shared pause—a chance to connect over hearty portions that reflect the Southern heritage of the region.

The menu here isn’t just about what’s served; it’s a mosaic of soulful favorites that invite you to indulge in the familiar comfort of baked chicken, tender BBQ ribs, or a cheesy chicken spaghetti that feels like a gentle nod to midweek nostalgia. The rice and gravy or fried chicken specials add a layer of seasonal rhythm, anchoring the experience in both place and tradition.

So whether you’re squeezing in a quick, nourishing lunch or carving out a moment for a slower breakfast, the Department Of Public Safety Cafeteria offers a quiet kind of charm. It’s a humble local refuge, a reminder that sometimes the best experiences aren’t extravagant—they’re simply heartfelt and steady, served up with a side of kindness and ease.

Despite the many "Cafeteria closed" signs still posted around the State Police and DPS cafeteria website still saying closed, the DPS cafeteria is OPEN. Apparently they had a soft re-opening in late December. Menu is the same, but not posted since their website is not updated yet. Monday - Red beans, Tuesday pasta/spaghetti, Wednesday Fried Chicken (YEAH!) Thursday varies - usually Rice and gravy (pork or beef, varies) and Friday Fried fish (YEAH) or seafood dish. Remember, it closes at 1:30, and they're usually out of food by then, espiecally the fried chicken. BTW Salads and sandwiches are now prepackaged.

Very good cooked hot nourishing meals and they have the best club sandwiches and salads. The prices are very reasonable there almost a steal! And the employees are welcoming.

Great food. A hidden gem in the area. not as cheap as it should be considering they use prison labor to make and serve the food, but the prices are still reasonable I guess. I like being able to order my eggs any way I want them. Which for me is sunny side up.

A classic "Southern Cafeteria"... if you haven't been... You're paying TOO MUCH for lunch/breakfast! A "Hot and two sides w/ bread"... delicious and light on the pockets! ! Google 'LSP Cafeteria' and check it out. Go NOW!

Teresa and her cooks offer delicious well-seasoned food prepared with love! Can't beat $8.80 (including tax) for an entree and two sides. Delicious homemade desserts available as well as soft serve ice cream. Pleasant workers, friendly staff and atmosphere exists daily. I would highly recommend everyone try this cafeteria. You will soon become a regular.

Excellent food! Weekly menu online with rotating specials and some staples like hamburger, chicken, and fried catfish baskets. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you get. You can expect sandwiches, salads, a variety of daily sides, pork chops, stuffed bell pepper, various pastas, red beans and rice, etc. Excellent prices for how much you get. The food really reminds me of mom and pop restaurants. My FAVORITE is the gumbo, followed by beef stew, and fried catfish.
